I am a political scientist studying digital authoritarianism. I currently combine two research positions: At the University of Amsterdam's Department of Politics, I work as an Assistant Professor studying democracy in India, including the politics behind internet shutdowns in India. At the KITLV in Leiden, I work on a project investigating disinformation and online influence operations in Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia. Articles from these projects were published in Democratization, The International Journal of Press/Politics and The International Journal of Communication.
My PhD research (2014-2018) at the UvA studied the effect of internet use on anti-government protest under authoritarian regimes, including fieldwork in Malaysia. The book based on my PhD dissertation was published with Palgrave Macmillan, while articles appeared in Contemporary Politics and Democratization. I also conducted a project studying host country influences on transnational repression, which was also published in Democratization.
I am an affiliated scientist to the International Panel on the Information Environment.
